A potent inhibitor of the cytomegalovirus and herpes. A prodrug which gives the active form after phosphorylation by a virus thymidine kinase. Ganciclovir triphosphate is incorporated into the DNA strand and so inhibits viral DNA polymersase. Ref: Drugs. 1990; 39 (4), 597-638.
